VIEW FROM THE TOP

Anne and her husband stayed in Ypres, Belgium, on their way back from holiday. The centrepiece of this city, reduced to rubble in World War 1, is the magnificent Cloth Hall, restored to its former glory and now housing the moving ‘In Flanders Fields’ museum.

As part of your visit to the Museum, you have the option of climbing over 200 steps to the top of the bell tower, seeing the large carillon (see photo below) on the way up. Needless to say, the views from the top are superb, and made all the more poignant as you are overlooking the great battlefields where so much bloodshed took place during that terrible conflict between 1914 and 1918.
